Qualifications
MA BM BCh (Oxford 1971) FRCS(England 1976)
Accredited as specialist in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery. (1982)
Post
Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Ipswich Hospital NHS Trust from Sept.1983 to retirement in Dec 2006, with private practice at the Nuffield Hospital, Ipswich.
Interests
I am a general orthopaedic surgeon but I have special interests in the management of trauma, hip and knee replacement, foot surgery and national and international standards for surgical and especially orthopaedic implants.
Publications
I have been a co-author of three text books and have written 15 peer reviewed papers for medical and surgical journals.
Medico-legal
I have considerable experience of medico-legal reporting for personal injury claims since 1980. I am listed as a graded expert by the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers, a checked expert of the Law Society (now Sweet & Maxwell) Register, and I am a founder member of the Expert Witness Institute. I was the founding President of the Ipswich Medico-legal Society. I produce about 150 reports per year and in addition act occasionally as an expert for independent review panels in the NHS complaints process. I occasionally give evidence as an expert in court. (once or twice a year). My instructions are now approximately 80% for claimant, 10% defendant, and 10% as joint expert. (Many of my claimant reports are now also used by defendants.)
Recognition
I am chairman of the technical committee of the International Standards Organisation that deals with the standards for nearly all surgical implants, including orthopaedic implants. (ISO/TC 150 - Implants for Surgery).
I am chairman of the committee of the British Standards Institution that deals with surgical implants at an international level. (BSI CH/150 Surgical Implants - International), and a member of the BSI Committee that deals with orthopaedic joint replacements (BSI CH/150/SC4.)
I have held various positions of responsibility such as chairman of the Anglian Regional Task Force on Junior Doctors’ Hours, chairman of the (National) Central Medical Manpower Committee, and have been a member of various Department of Health national committees.
In recognition of my local, regional, national and international work I was awarded successively distinction awards at the C, B, and A levels.
