EXPERIENCE
MAXILLOFACIAL SURGERY
The various junior grades prior to Medical school provided me with a good basic grounding in the specialty. General experience was gained in dento-alveolar surgery, trauma, salivary gland surgery & orthognathic surgery. An introduction to the principles of the management of oro-facial malignancy, including the use of cytotoxic chemotherapy, provided a solid foundation for the ensuing period in Higher Surgical Training.
Higher Surgical Training in 1994 provided a great increase in my exposure in all aspects of the specialty. In addition to the more advanced management of subjects covered, experience in Head & Neck Oncology, Cleft Surgery (primary & secondary), Aesthetic Facial Surgery & Orthognathic Surgery has widely influenced my experience & interests.
Although maintaining a general interest in Maxillo-Facial Surgery, my sub-specialist interest is in the treatment of Head & Neck malignancy, in particular with relation to functional & aesthetic reconstruction. I have gained considerable experience in reconstructive techniques, including local and regional rotational flaps and micro vascular free tissue transfer (radial forearm, fibula, scapula and DCIA flaps)
Experience in other aspects of Aesthetic Facial Surgery (Rhytidectomy, blephroplasty, cheiloplasty, rhinoplasty, pinnaplasty, scar revision, liposuction, laser surgery & Orthognathic Surgery) has provided a good complementary interest.
I have an interest in trauma in general, but particularly of the facial skeleton and soft tissues of the face. I have completed the Instructors course and teach on ATLS courses throughout the country.
I have been providing medico-legal reports since 1990. My main areas of interest include Facial trauma (teeth, facial bony fractures and soft tissue injuries), TMJ problems, Facial cancer, Facial reconstructive surgery and Dental Implantology.
ACCIDENT AND EMERGENCY
This post was in a busy (approximately 60,000 new patient attendance’s per annum) teaching hospital. The job, in the Professorial Unit, involved dealing with a variety of illnesses and injuries, a large percentage of which have acute medical or surgical problems. The extensive nearby motorway network ensured a high trauma workload, allowing one to gain experience in the initial evaluation and management.
A very wide general experience in the general emergency management of patients, spanning most of the medical and surgical specialities, was gained.
ORTHOPAEDICS
This post was with a surgeon with a particular interest in paediatric orthopaedics and arthroscopic surgery.
There was a large trauma component and a wide range of management and operative experience was gained.
