Medico Legal Experience

I worked as a consultant psychiatrist for almost twenty nine years and I was responsible for developing and providing the psychiatric service for a large rural area of West Wales (Ceredigion and Carmarthen). I was a member of various medical committees including the executive of the Welsh Division of the College of Psychiatrists and the Advisory Committee on Mental Health for the Welsh Office. I developed an interest in medico-legal work over the last ten or more years. I retired from full time work with the NHS in 1996 and I then worked part-time until 1998. Since retiring from full time work I have been actively engaged in medico-legal work. I have written between 150 and 200 medico-legal reports a year over the last five years. About 75% of this work has been civil and the remainder criminal. In the case of the civil work, I have previously undertaken work for the claimant in 65%-70% of cases (prior to the recent arrangements whereby Joint Instructions are issued). A past chairman of the Welsh Psychiatric Society and of Y Gymdeithas Feddygol (Welsh Medical Society), I am the author of three books in Welsh on psychiatric topics and approximately 100 papers and articles. A detailed list of publications can be provided, if required. I was formerly a member of the Mental Health Act Commission (Visiting Commissioner) and I am still a Second Opinion Appointed Doctor for the Commission. I am a member of the Mental Health Review Tribunal for Wales.
