Medico Legal Experience
EXPERIENCE AS A MEDICOLEGAL EXPERT:
I prepared around 4000 medicolegal reports in the past 10 years, almost equally divided between Claimants and Defendants – or by joint instruction – with a high level of satisfaction of both.
During these 24 years, as a Consultant Surgeon in Trauma & Orthopaedics, and in Accident & Emergency I have gained valuable and extensive experience in the management of severe injuries, of different types of accidents, and serious medical emergencies. Having dealt, personally, with the severest of injuries, at resuscitation, in theatre for surgical repair, and long-term follow- up, I have developed a good sense of future prognostic assessment and medicolegal fair judgement. Not only the physical aspects of injury and illness that I have enjoyed treating and rehabilitating, but also the assessment of psychological, social, economic and occupational effects which inevitably are linked with such unfortunate events in life. This I found most useful in the assessment of “Causation” and measuring “Quantum” in both personal injury and negligence cases. I have, of course, been engaged in medicolegal work since I was a trainee (Orthopaedic Registrar) in 1981. Managerial responsibility, as the Head of Department, has added to my experience in making difficult, but fair and impartial, judgements regarding the standard of medical management (or mis-management) of patients by colleagues. I have also accumulated a large collection of medical slides for teaching, to help educate medical personnel regarding Risk Management to avoid medical negligence and litigation.
